Brooke FishingBrooke Baker was born and raised in a suburb on the northern edge of Oklahoma City. Before she could even walk it was evident that she loved playing with any kind of ball. Her active personality grew into a love for all sports, and nothing slowed her down. She played basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, and flag football, but also loved to drive her go-cart, roller blade, swim, mountain bike, snowboard, hunt, and fish. Although her parents were avid golfers, she found no interest in golf at all during her childhood, claiming it lacked the fast-paced, aggressive dynamics of the competitive sports she enjoyed.

That perspective changed on June 10, 2003 when she and her sister, Alex, were in a very serious car accident while on the way to one of her many summer league basketball games. While her sister was behind the wheel of her Jeep Grand Cherokee with Brooke in the front passenger seat, they were T-boned while crossing an intersection by a full size Ford F-150 truck traveling at 70 miles per hour. The front of the truck struck in the middle of the right side of the Jeep, directly into Brooke’s seat. Her older sister was not seriously injured, but Brooke spent 4 days in the ICU at OU Medical Center while doctors monitored the subdural hematoma on her brain. Besides the fractured collarbone caused by the seat belt, most of the injuries and fractures she sustained were to her head.

Thankful for the prayers from so many friends, Brooke made a full recovery during what she calls, “the most boring summer of [her] life.” After the physical injuries healed at the end of the summer, the neurologist told her the only sport he would allow her to play at the time was golf. Craving activity, she finally touched a club and played ten times before being cleared to play basketball again later that year. By the following summer at age 15, she became attracted to the thought of an individual sport so her parents decided to get her golf clubs and lessons. Within a short time she broke 90, 6 months later she broke 80, 6 months after that she won her 1st tournament, broke 70, and the rest is history.

The summer after Brooke’s freshman year of college she studied abroad in Santiago, Chile.  While living with a host family there that spoke no English, she attended Spanish classes at the University and indulged in her one her favorite passions as often as she could, adventurous traveling. She went sandboarding in the driest desert in the world in Northern Chile, went to the beach and ports in Central Chile, and went dogsledding, snowmobiling, and snowboarding on active volcanoes while visiting glaciers and penguins in the southernmost city in the world in Patagonia. Brooke looks back on the study abroad experience as something that still defines her as a person, encompassing her enthusiasm for independent travel, adventurous activities, and fluency with the Spanish language.

Brooke Baker Graduation After enjoying 2 years of classes, friends and golf at the University of Tulsa, Brooke decided to take a great opportunity by moving to Raleigh, NC to play for the Wolfpack and compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Learning to love the busy life of a Division I student athlete, juggling part-time jobs, internships, classes, practice, and tournaments, she thoroughly enjoyed college golf. She also especially performed well during the independent summer months, capturing the Oklahoma State Amateur title in 2009, followed by Collegiate Players Tour titles in 2010 and 2011. After graduating cum laude in May of 2012 with a degree in Business Administration concentrating in Entrepreneurship, she continued to play national amateur events all summer with the plan to enter the LPGA Qualifying process the following year.

With the help of incredibly wonderful friends, Brooke moved to Greenville, South Carolina and began working, playing, and practicing at The Cliffs courses in September of 2012.  She continued to compete in national amateur events, as well as play in professional mini-tour events as an amateur, through February of 2013. Always approaching life with an attitude of gratitude, she made the decision to turn professional in the early spring of 2013 after her Golfweek World Amateur Ranking reached 43rd. Brooke is now excited for the hard work, preparation, and competitions leading to the LPGA Qualifying Tournaments this fall.
